Is Rent-to-Own always a scam?

Hello, like many of us in the US, I find myself with huge debt but still want to have a nice place to live that accommodates me and my kids. The places that advertise Rent-To-Own listings locally all have an F with the Better Business Bureau here in California. Does anyone know of a reputable business where your monthly rent can go toward paying off and owning a home?
